When
describing contemporary settlement structures, it is becoming increasingly
necessary to dispense with the categories of "town" and "country". We live
in a collage of urban, suburban and rural elements which, together, form
a dense multi-core patchwork of different agglomerations. This development
presents Switzerland with a number of difficult political problems. Solving
them will be quite a challenge, especially to the institutional framework
      of Swiss federalism.

The contributors and case studies provide an up to date inventory which
embraces urban development, sociological, geographical and economic trends.
In addition the renowned Dutch architect's office MVRDV, which is known
for it's non-conformist conceptions and work, has drafted a spatial vision
for Switzerland from an outsider's point of view.
